Tantra & Sacred Sexuality
Tantra
Tantra is a philosophy, a science, an art, a way of life, and an ancient system of rituals and techniques that use the forces of creative and sexual energy to expand and raise consciousness. The word “Tantra” comes from the Sanskrit “tanoti” (to expand) and “trayati” (liberation).
Tantra, in its broadest form, has always existed, and elements of tantric exploration can be found in ancient cultures around the world, with varying forms and expressions of similar core concepts. Tantra as it is commonly discussed today is a weaving of various Eastern teachings, with deep roots in Indian Hinduism, Chinese Taoism, and Tibetan Buddhism. There are many forms and lineages today that stem from these ancient traditions.
Tantra seeks to balance polarities and to unionize body and mind, feminine and masculine, sexuality and spirituality. It largely focuses on presence, awareness, and connection to the breath— the bridge between body and mind, the unconscious and the conscious. Tantra is a holistic approach to life that involves yoga, breath work, mantra, yantra, sexuality, spirituality, and so much more.
I am not a purist, and do not claim to teach a specific lineage of Tantra. Rather, what I share is a weaving of different teachings of Tantra, internal alchemy, and sacred sexuality that I have received that resonate with me. Tantra invites you to live the truth that is uniquely you, rather than stating that there is one set of teachings to abide by. This was beautifully illustrated by Rumi, who said, “The lamps are different, but the Light is the same.”
I believe ultimately that all the lineages bring us to the same destination, and which path each individual chooses to take is up to them. I invite you to take what resonates, leave the rest, and to always continue your own self-exploration in defining what your unique truth is. The teachings I share are adapted to work within the western world, which operates very differently than the eastern world. I do my best to maintain the authenticity of these teachings as they were handed to me.
Sacred Sexuality
Sacred sexuality is the merging of spirituality and heart with sexuality. It is the process of working with our sexual energy consciously and intentionally in order to more deeply and authentically connect with ourselves, our partners, and the world around us.
Our sexuality is our greatest super power as human beings. Sexual and creative energy are the essence of the second chakra, which is where we birth both new life (babies) and our creations from. Everything in creation IS sexual energy: sex is the precursor to life, and therefore creation and sex are intimately intertwined. This creative sexual energy is called Qi/chi, prana, life force, sekhem, and many other terms in various cultures. It is the foundation of our vitality.
When we are disconnected from our sexual and creative energy, we are disconnected from our divinity, and rendered more complacent. The more we learn to understand this energy as sacred and immensely potent, the more we step into our most empowered, fully activated selves. Because our society is ridden with so much fear, guilt, and shame around this energy, we have created quite a chaotic, disconnected world. As we reclaim this power and learn to work with this energy consciously and lovingly, we birth a whole new world into existence.
